Donation to Camber Community Group
The Jempson Foundation recently made a donation to Camber Community Group, to develop and design Camber village logo and anti-litter/social responsibility campaign for Summer 2021.
Janette Robins said, “We would like to thank The Jempson Foundation for their support. The donation is so gratefully received. With the large number of visitors and holidaymakers to Camber beach resort, litter and dog fouling has become a very serious issue throughout the Camber village and the beach. The local community would like to encourage those visitors to have a sense of ‘ownership’, sharing and responsibility to where they are and the environment during their stay. This funding would enable work on an overall logo concept for the campaign. We are delighted that the new antilitter and anti-social behaviour campaign has been approved by Rother District Council and we hope to start rolling out by the end of May. Thank you, this donation will make a real difference.”
Delicatessen Stalwart Retires
The time has come to say goodbye and we wish Alfred a fond farewell as he starts his well-deserved retirement after the past 42 years of dedicated service at Jempson’s.
The renown and charismatic Alfred began his illustrious career with us in 1979 with Harold Jempson and Michael Bailey at the helm. Back then, we just had one, small, self-service store with around 25 staff.
Alf has many memories of his time with Jempson’s and seen considerable changes to the business. He recalls in the early days every morning at 9.30am the bell rang once, signalling all men to go for their coffee break and again at 10am for the ladies! He also remembers the bread strike, when Jempson’s bakers were tirelessly working all day and night making thousands of loaves of bread a week, never turning a customer away! The expansion of the business within the old shop, to it nearly being burnt down in 1997 (his beloved Deli counter was completely destroyed), the opening of a brand-new Superstore on the Peasmarsh site in 2001, to the enlargement of the business with supermarkets, convenience stores, cafés and more recently the acquisition of The Rye Bakery business.
As one of the most longstanding members of the team, Stephen Jempson has fond memories of Alf’s time at Jempson’s, most notably his legendary love of cake! “It was nothing for him to eat 5 or 6 for the morning coffee break” Stephen said. “Alf was always a team player, he’s organised mini golf tournaments on Saturday nights for the students at Camber. I will always remember his wonderful rapport with customers and his fondness for singing Christmas carols, as well as his whistling! I can remember even making Alf get his first passport and us going to the food markets in Paris, where we’d source fresh produce and delicious cheeses for the Deli! A lot of nostalgia and memories, but in essence a wonderfully loyal, honest and hardworking gentleman who has been a true asset, thank you, it’s much appreciated. Best wishes for a happy retirement, you will forever be a Jempson’s Local Hero, we will all miss you”

The Jempson Foundation recently made a donation to Westerleigh Judo, to update their training mats. Westerleigh specialize in adaptive Judo and needed new mats to abide with social distancing.
Sarah Haines said, “We would like to thank The Jempson Foundation for their support. The donation is so gratefully received. Westerleigh hope to continue the amazing work and fun we have have had from the last 25 years. With around 40% of our athletes having a physical or learning disability, 15-20% being, ‘looked after children’ and being based in an area of deprivation, our training club has been a lifeline for many families over the years. Thank you, this donation will make a real difference.”

Additional COVID19 Precautions
We continue to take every measure possible to keep everyone safe and reduce the risk of spreading the infection, and would like to remind customers that the below steps are necessary to protect our staff, our customers and vulnerable members of the community.
ALL CUSTOMERS MUST:
- Wearing a face covering in-store is mandatory (on entry and during your time in store).
If you don’t have your own, please speak to a colleague for help. Refer to the latest Government advice for exemptions.
- Sanitize their hands with the hand-wipe provided on entry to the store. (If you are wearing gloves, you must wipe your gloved hands).
A stringent surface sanitizing routine throughout the store is in place. However, we encourage you to retain the hand-wipe and use it to wipe the handle of your basket or trolley.
For your own safety and the safety of others, please ensure you maintain the 2 metre (6’) distancing rule between other shoppers and staff AT ALL TIMES whilst in the store.
Customers are asked to practice good respiratory hygiene at all times – coughs and sneezes spray infection through the air. Please cough into your elbow or shoulder.
PLEASE DO RESPECT ALL OUR COLLEAGUES.
May we thank you for your continued cooperation.
Stephen and every colleague in every store say “THANK YOU” for the many kind compliments we have received.
